The 2018 BMW X7 concept announces the arrival in the next year of a large SUV positioned above the x 5. This luxury vehicle renews the BMW stylistic codes.

Does the shadow of Chris Bangle still haunt the corridors of the BMW-style office? In Munich, history seems to be an eternal restarting. Almost twenty years after the first concepts of the Bangle era which had given rise to a wave of protest for their audacity, the Munich builder once again took the risk of hitting the sensibilities of motorists. If you are to reinvent yourself and to challenge yourself, should it not be disturbed? The daring bet takes shape, this time, on the concept 2018 BMW X7 iPerformance unveiled at the Frankfurt Fair. Announced since Belle Lure, the X7 will crown the range of SUVs by positioning itself above the X 5 as much by its performances and its size which should exceed 5.10 m in length. Produced in the American factory of the German group, this model has a vocation to compete with the Mercedes GLS, Range Rover lengthened, Audi Q7 and other American SUV XXL such as the Cadillac Escalade. Due to its positioning, the X7 is mainly intended for the American and Chinese markets.

Like the 7 2001 series E65, the study of the X7, which is said to be very close to the serial version marketed next year, besides the way to the controversy. Preparing for the arrival of a new stylistic theme, the concept X 7 is inspired by the concept Vision Future luxury presented in Beijing in 2014. These loans are visible at the optical level which adopt laser technology and which gain in thinness, losing their circular drawing, typical of the brand. Another BMW symbol, the double-bean Grille also performs its revolution. It becomes very massive, occupying most of the front side. Like the concept of 2014, there are also many scoops and air inlets to improve the aerodynamic flux, very hollow flanks. As for the chromed butts scattered here and there, they interfere with the elegance and simplicity of the design. Camped on 23-inch wheels, the X 7 Concept will make a strong impression in Frankfurt, next to the new X 3 and Z4 and series 8 concepts. But the serial version should be less demonstrative than the study.

The new codes of luxury

The concept of Frankfurt reveals a six-seater architecture with individual seats on the three rows. The serial version should, however, allow a 7-seater configuration, with three places on Tier 2. Less in rupture than the outside, the cockpit evolves nevertheless, going further than today in the trend to the purified universes. There are some immutable BMW codes, such as the driver-oriented center console. BMW remains loyal to the iDrive controller allowing traffic in the 12.3-inch high-definition color display.

The central screen is better integrated and, under the cap facing the driver, the instrumentation is now digital. The choice of quality materials emphasizes the desire to hoist the X7 at the top of the luxury universe. The panoramic glass roof floods with light this refined cockpit. It covers the entire pavilion. A solution which seems however inapplicable in series for technical questions. Equipped with a Y-frame for the benefit of rigidity, the roof has a system that allows modifying the interior atmosphere by playing on the opacity of the glass.

2018 BMW X7 Redesign and Changes

iPerformance Engine with Hybrid Power

As the iperformance particle suggests, the X7 concept is part of the manufacturer’s offensive in the field of electric mobility. At a press conference, Harald Krüger, the president of the German group, announced on 7 September an ambitious program of 25 electrified vehicles by 2025, including 12 models 100% electric. This offensive includes the electric MINI unveiled in Frankfurt, the X 3 full electric marketed in 2020 and an unreleased sedan 100% electric. Named BMW INEXT, this new 4-door model will be placed between the i3 and the i8 in the BMW I range. The X7 concept is powered by a rechargeable hybrid traction chain. It combines a Twin power Turbo gasoline direct injection engine with an electric motor.
