2018 Mitsubishi Space Star Redesign, Specs, Interior, Prices

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017 - Mitsubishi

Recently renewed by a mid-life restyling, the 2018 Mitsubishi Space Star has a more masculine appearance due mainly to the new front bonnet full of ribs and to the redesigned optical groups, also available with bi-xenon lights. The proven version has the 70 HP 1.0 engine, which is ideal for managing costs.

REDESIGN & CHANGES

Despite being more gritty than before in appearance, the Mitsubishi Space Star is a car that points to the hard. In Japan is part of the B segment, that is, the Utilitarians, but for size and content we consider it more suitable to be compared with Fiat Panda, Fiat 500, Citroen C1, Peugeot 108, Toyota Aygo, Renault Twingo, Suzuki speedy and so on.

In the world of Superminis the Space Star is without a doubt very spacious, also thanks to the centimeters more than the competitors: the side of the Fiat Panda is counted 15 cm more in length and 3 in width, for a total of 3.8 and 1.67 meters respectively. The five standard doors offer convenient access to the rear bench, and space is not even for the tallest. It is homologated for five passengers, but obviously, to have some ease it is good to be in four. Equally generous the trunk, which has a capacity of 235 liters. The Suzuki Swift, which boasts the record in the segment with its 254 liters, leaves the first place of the podium at the small “Mitsu” when it knocks back the back: 726 VS 1,100 liters.

In the Mitsubishi Space Star Interior has not changed much, but you have the possibility to have new fabrics for the seats and appears (optional) a new infotainment system with smartphone Link-which allows you to connect your smartphone-and you can be updated on the traffic in real time. Wanting there is the MGN system with 6.5 “screen and GPS navigator. The finishes instead remain poor, the design of the little modern plank. The command to control the window of the passenger, placed only on the panel of the right door, is not handy for the driver.

specifications

The Mitsubishi Space Star is available with two gasoline engines, 1.0 3 cylinders of 70 CV (also LPG) and 1.2 3 cylinders from 80 hp that, price list in the hand, costs 1,150 euros more. The 1.0 is the most rational choice, it allows you to save on the purchase price, on the possession fee and something even in terms of consumption. It’s good for city use and for short trips in general, not for long distances because the engine is rather lazy despite the only 845 kg of weight of the car.

To pull out the performance, which then on the card is not lacking (172 km/h maximum speed and 0-100 in 13.6 seconds are more than decent values), it is necessary to squeeze the three aspirated cylinders keeping the needle of the tachometer above quota 3,000 rpm. The long gear ratios do not help in recovery, on the other hand, they keep the engine at low revs even on the highway, where it happens to have to climb gear to speed up. Content weight and long gears are a panacea for consumption: The Space Star has proved to be able to travel 18 km/L in real use without special attention to the driving style.

In the busy streets of the city, the Mitsubishi space Star puts at ease with a soft clutch and a little-fatigued steering, good visibility and an excellent turning radius (just over 9 meters) that allows you to maneuver in little space. The possibility of adding the CVT automatic gearbox to version 1.2 to facilitate life in traffic is interesting. Outside the urban area, you feel the lack of a bit of grit if you opt for the less powerful unit. The steering is light and very multiplied, in the suburban area we would have wanted more precise.

PRICE

The price list of the Mitsubishi Space Star is not the most competitive although, as mentioned, the dimensions are considerably higher than those of the superminis with which we compared it and the house is very often generous with promotions. Prices start from 12,490 euros for version 1.0 Invite and reach 15,450 euros for version 1.0 ClearTec Intense, equipped as standard with automatic air conditioning, audio system with MP3 and DAB radio, Bluetooth system, front and rear electric glazing, electrically adjustable and heated rearview mirrors, and 15 “alloy wheels.

The range also includes the Space Star 1.0 GPL Invite (14,140 euro) and Intense (17,100 euro). The warranty of 5 years up to 100,000 km is interesting.

Three of the many alternatives the most akin is the Suzuki swift, a spartan, and very spacious car, just like the Mitsubishi Space Star. Compared to the speed, it has a lower price list with equal endowment and a higher riding seat; On the other hand, I only got three stars in the crash test EuroNCAP against the four obtained from the Space Star.

For those looking for a car with no frills, compact in size, suitable for urban life, but spacious enough to move in four and with a suitable trunk for daily shopping.

Strengths

-It is very spacious, and even the trunk is generous
-The excellent steering radius makes it easy to maneuver

Weaknesses

-The interiors look cheap and a little dated
-The engine is lazy at low revs: to resume it is necessary to use the gearbox
