A New generation of Honda CR-V will be launched next year. It will mark the end of the diesel which is replaced by a hybrid traction chain.
While pursuing a career in Europe at least discreet, the Honda CR-V proves to be the second-largest compact SUV in the world, behind the Nissan X-Trail, but in front of the Toyota RAV4. The gigantism of the American market weighs heavily in these results.
This is probably what drove Honda to choose to launch its fifth generation, already a year ago in the United States. Maybe also to have time to tweak the hybrid version, the first of its kind, called to replace the diesel version in Europe.
This introduction of a hybrid motorization within the Honda catalog marks the beginning of a new era in which electrification, whether partial or total, will be extended to the entire Honda range. A return awaited by the customers of the hybrid Jazz, somewhat aback by its disappearance.
The wheelbase increases for the benefit of the habitability.
Over the generations, the CR-V has grown. Its fifth generation still took a few centimeters, especially in width (+ 3 cm). Even if a family air remains, this new CR-V follows the dynamism initiated by the last Civic, sporting a more aggressive grille and flanks with more muscular curves.
More decisively, this SUV is based on the ACE platform for Advanced Compatibility Engineering, inaugurated recently by the Civic. Thanks to an increased wheelbase, this modular structure allows for superior habitability, especially in rear seats. It also brings significant progress in shock resistance.
On the engine side, the event is first the announced demise of diesel mechanics. A page is turning. In essence, the CR-V yields to the “downsizing” by adopting the 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo of 182 hp recently discovered in the Civic. This 4-cylinder will be coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT-type automatic drive.
It will take several more to wait after the launch to discover its hybrid version. Its traction chain called I-MMD, for Intelligent multi-mode Drive, will combine a 4-cylinder 2 liter atmospheric I-VTEC cycle with two electric motors, to provide a total power of about 200 hp.
The first will provide the propulsion in pure and hybrid electric mode, the second one shall act as a generator to recharge the battery. The I-MMD system has a single transmission ratio. Depending on the conditions of use, it determines only the choice of driving modes: electric, hybrid or thermal. The low capacity of the battery implies a limited autonomy of 2 or 3 kilometers in electric.
In the United States, American Honda has positioned the new 2018 Honda CR-V as a potential rival of the BMW X3. In Europe, we see it more surely rubbing on the Toyota RAV4 hybrid. In order to be compared to the German premium, the Japanese SUV would have a manufactured interior with quality materials. We will try to check this out at the Frankfurt show next week
