2018 Suzuki S-Cross Reliability Test

2018 Suzuki S-Cross Reliability Test

Try-with a grille that shows the fangs and small turbo petrol engines sharpened, the new 2018 Suzuki S-Cross remembers our good memory. The S-Cross has so far carried out a discreet career, in the shadow of the Tara. Between these two enemy brothers, the difference lies in a question of size but also of style. While the “small” (4.18 m) willingly assumes its status as an adventurer, the “big” S-Cross (4.30 m) had instead staked on the discreet charm of the crossover, without having the same success.

Fortunately, Suzuki will not be slow to rectify the shooting. Only three years after its launch, the S-Cross enjoys a real restyling, accompanied by a profound overhaul of its mechanics. With regard to the evolution of style, the most striking are the adoption of a chrome grille with ten branches, framed with more aggressive LED optics.

2018 Suzuki S-Cross Changes; A new multimedia interface

At the same time, the hood was raised and had two ribs, while the ground clearance was increased to 18 cm. Undoubtedly influenced by the success of strong competitors in style, starting with the Toyota C-HR, the Suzuki designers visibly wanted to accentuate its SUV side. The S-Cross is a personality winner.

In the interior, evolution is more measured. From the second level of finishing, we have found a new interface integrating, on a 7-inch touch screen, the multimedia system, navigation, the backup camera, and the ability to duplicate the applications of its smartphone.

Bigger changes were made under the hood. In addition to the 1.6-litre diesel of 120 HP which remains on the program, the 2018 Suzuki S-Cross indeed adopts two new small turbo petrol engines Boosterjet, inaugurated recently by other models of the range. A 3-cylinder 1 liter of 111 hp and a 4-cylinder 1.4 liter of 140 hp.

With a long experience in all terrain, Suzuki offers these two mechanics with a two or four wheel drive (+ €2,000). In addition, recognizing that some S-Cross owners will use it mainly in the city, it adds the possibility of opting for a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission (€1,600).

If the 1.4 Boosterjet allows the combination of these two options, the 1.0 requires a choice. We have retained the automatic-box traction version which, proposed in a privileged intermediate finish, is displayed at €23,490.

First finding, despite the lack of a balancing shaft, Suzuki engineers managed to annihilate the vibrations of the 3-cylinders. This mechanics is so discreet in idling that, in the early days, the driver feels like he has stalled.

As for the famous response time of the turbo engine, it is here erased by the wedding with the automatic box. On the consumption side, as the S-Cross proves to be lighter than its rivals, combined with the sobriety of the 3-cylinder, this generates a very reasonable average, just above 6 L/100 km during our test.

With 111 HP under the hood to tow a mass of 1,160 kg, accelerations and recoveries are certainly not “but, thanks to a torque of 170 Nm available between 1,700 and 3,500 rpm, they will satisfy many customers. The others will still be able to turn to the 1.4 of 140 hp.

The S-Cross has not changed fundamentally, but the few alterations it has been subjected to, coupled with the most pleasant and efficient gasoline mechanics, are able to revive his career. Its price/benefit ratio remains attractive and the 1.0 Boosterjet version of our essay is an interesting alternative to diesel. The new 2018 Suzuki S-Cross, here in Allgrip version, also receives LED taillights.
