By grafting a supercar engine in the pick-up F 150, Ford Performance has spawned an extraordinary gear, carved to sting a sprint through the large spaces.
The pick-up F 150 has been the best-selling “car” in the United States for decades. Good year, Ford runs between 600,000 and 900,000 copies. In Supercrew version, this truck can curl the 6 meters long, a template somewhat moved in our areas, but perfectly adapted to the large American stretches.
On both sides of the Atlantic, a pick-up is destined to play the beasts of the Somme. It remains that the engineers of Ford Performance, never short of imagination, decided to make it a sports car. Like those involved in the Baja 1000, a race in the Mexican desert.
This is how the monstrous F 150 Raptor was born: 5.61 meters long, 450 hp, and 2.6 tons empty! A beautiful baby we tried on a cross-country track east of Paris. That the amateurs of the genre do not rejoice too fast. The 2019 Ford F 150 Raptor will never be officially imported into the hexagon. Ford simply wanted to give us a glimpse of his know-how in the field.
For the spectacular side, it is successful. At the stop, the Raptor is already impressing. His generous dimensions make a Ford Ranger go for a toy. And again, we only had the SUPERCAB bodywork, with antagonistic rear doors, which is not the longest.
Unlike the European double cab pickups, the Raptor SuperCab, with a very large wheelbase (3.41 m), offers five real squares. Its 1.70-metre long bucket has a load capacity of 1495 liters and 500 kg. In Europe, this Ford of the halls can tow up to 3.5 tons.
Remains to evoke the choice piece of the Raptor, of course, we want to talk about its engine. The second generation we discover today is the fruit of an American downsizing. The 6.2-litre V8 of the original Raptor is replaced by a “small” V6 with a 3.5-L biturbo.
Ford announces a 23% reduction in consumption. The average value, according to EPA standards, falls from 18 L/100 km to 14.7 l/100 km. This modern block has a double direct and indirect injection. It was from this V6 that Ford motorists developed the engine of the GT supercar.
The two mechanics have 60% of common parts. In the pickup, the power is reduced from 647 hp to 450 hp. More importantly, the Maxi torque is 691 Nm at 3,500 rpm. A review of the torque curves shows however that the former atmospheric block was superior to it below 2,000 rpm. But this slight deficit due to the response time of the turbos is partly erased by an automatic gearbox with 10 gears.
At the wheel of a machine of this caliber, the difficulty is to find a ground to its extent. On our dear departmental side, when you cross another vehicle, you have to practically go down the ditch. Even the circuit made available to us seems too narrow.
We imagined ourselves “drifter” endlessly on the ground floor, but the owner of the premises, no doubt concerned about the state of his fencing, did not really let us. We still found that the Normal mode, in which the Raptor is propulsive, does not allow to completely disconnect the ESP. Frustrating.
So we switched to Weather mode, in other words in the 4-wheel drive on demand, and it was already better. Given the state of the terrain, we then opted for the Mud and Sand mode, with blocked central and rear differential blocking. If motor skills were ensured, the Raptor was undergoing excessively and refused to turn.
The few straight portions of the line allowed us to verify that 450 ch is not a demonic power when you have to take off a mass of 2,585 kilos. In these circumstances, it is also necessary to ensure that braking is anticipated. The four ventilated brake discs have a great deal to do to slow down the gear.
In the end, it is not the performance of the Raptor that impressed us, nor its behavior in curves, but its ability to absorb the difficulties of the terrain by preserving its passengers. Despite its rigid rear axle suspended by spring slides, this 2019 Ford F 150 Raptor flies over the holes and bumps with a rare ease. His secret boot is Fox shocks, an American specialist of the kind, providing great deflections: 330 mm in front and 353 mm in the back.
A word finally to clarify that the massive dashboard does not shine by the quality of its plastics. But, it seems that the average American is hardly focused on foam materials, and would be more interested in cup holders. He will therefore appreciate the volume of the large central console which allows him to embark an entire pack of his favorite soda.
If a pickup has a vocation to play the utilities, the 2019 Ford F 150 Raptor is a player and sufficiently inflated to provoke a GTI at the green light. If the offset side of the machine seduces you, you will have to go through a licensed dealer like American Car City. The bill may be salted. Count €100,000 TTC, compared to less than $50,000 without taxes in the United States. Small consolation at €10,000, in France, the pickups are exempt from Malus.
