2020 Honda Civic Type R; A King of Efficiency
The very spectacular Honda Civic Type R demonstrates a real talent for performance, record in support. She’s the Queen of the Ring. Just one year ago, the 2020 Honda Civic Type R set a new record for “traction” on the legendary Nürburgring Track, running its 20.8 kilometers in 7 minutes 43 seconds and 8 tenths. For more than a quarter of a century, the Type R versions, such as Racing, have boosted the Honda range.

Inaugurated by the NSX in 1992, this sports label has literally furious several generations of Integra, Accord, and Civic. An outstanding engine builder, the Japanese manufacturer has developed incredible VTEC engines capable of taking up to 9 000 rpm, like a racing mechanics.
These furious mechanics were long his trademark before the necessary reduction of CO2 emissions forced him to give in to the sirens of the overfeeding.
The talented Japanese engine-makers have nevertheless succeeded in harmoniously cohabiting turbo and totally variable distribution, the VTEC being used to reduce the response time.
The second version of the 4-cylinder 2 liters of the latest Civic Type R displays 320 ch, the remarkable specific power of 160 ch/L. Translated in terms of performance, this gives a 0 to 100 km/h shot in 5.8 seconds and a peak speed of 272 km/ h, values comparable to those of the first NSX coupé, excuse some!
The difficulty, for a traction, was in the transmission of 400 Nm of torque on the bitumen. The engineers used the major means, including a decoupled pivot front train and a limited slip differential.
The sporting efficiency that allowed the Civic to distance its rivals on the route of the massif of the Eiffel also holds in a stiffer crate, a lowered center of gravity, an increased wheelbase, wider tires and a multi-arms rear train. Not to mention spectacular aerodynamic appendages that are not there to make figuration.
Notable change compared to the previous generation, the driver promoted driver is propped up in a superb bucket seat installed 25 mm lower. The sleek dashboard with digital instrumentation focusing on the tachometer and the small shift lever with an aluminum knob add to the sporting atmosphere.
We would swear to be at the wheel of a coupe. The engine has gained in character, the excellent manual gearbox delivering an automatic “heel-tip” makes it possible to derive the Quintessence, and the three exhaust outputs are perfectly in the tone.
This exciting mechanical is also easy to operate. The road behavior of the 2020 Honda Civic Type R proves to be both incisive and stable. On the circuit, the limit comes from the tires, but it could easily be repelled by using semi-slicks.
Good surprise, this formidable sporting efficiency was not achieved at the expense of comfort. Thanks to a damping driven by ZF Sachs in the extended register, the Type R proves easy to live on a daily basis. Only restrictions this pleasant versatility, a homologation in only four places and a small tank of 46 liters which offers little more than 400 kilometers of autonomy.
Still, the sporting potential of this “GTI” of the third millennium is simply sensational. This traction actually shows a performance level equivalent to that of a good GT of the nineties. And the boundaries of the genre are probably not yet reached. Renault is poised to meet the Nürburgring challenge with a Trophy version of the new Megane RS. As long as there are amateurs.
