Before the German premium, Jaguar challenged the supremacy of Tesla on the electric family segment with its 2019 Jaguar i-Pace crossover presented in the world premiere at the Geneva show 2018.
In the zero-emission family vehicle race, Jaguar took the speed of the German premium, its main rivals. The English firm is thus the first to challenge Tesla on its land, that of the electric family. Presented in the form of a concept at the Los Angeles 2016, the crossover I-Pace will become a reality sometime in the year 2018. Jaguar has even already unveiled the range and rates, starting from 78 380 euros. For the record, the F-Pace equipped with the 380 hp Turbo petrol V6 starts at 83 524 euros. With this new electric vehicle, the English manufacturer puts in a position to lower the average of its CO2 emissions and to decrease its carbon footprint. Designed around a modified F-pace aluminum platform, the I-Pace displays volumes similar to those of the brand’s large SUV. If it makes less than five centimeters in length (4.68 m) at F-Pace, it takes advantage of its electric propulsion which has allowed to completely rethink the architecture and to completely free itself from the constraints of a thermal model. As a result, the 2019 Jaguar i-Pace offers a much more generous wheelbase (2.99 m) than the similar template models this benefits in the first place to the habitability and the volume of the chest.

Vehicle of a new kind, 2019 Jaguar i-Pace takes care to be immediately identifiable as a member of the Jaguar family. The grille is largely inspired by the latest models of the brand, the E-Pace, and the XE sedan. The shapes are balanced, reflecting the absence of cantilevers and wheels positioned at the four corners. The fleeing roof line evokes a coupe while the rear treatment refers to the E-Pace with its lights and small rear window which may greatly reduce the visibility. Ian Callum assures that the concept of C-X75 supercar has been used as an inspiration for designers. The result is rewarded with an aerodynamic Cx of 0.29.

The whole attraction of the I-Pace is based on its 100% electric motorization. Jaguar installed two electric motors, one per axle. In fact, 2019 Jaguar i-Pace is a four-wheel drive vehicle. The combined power comes out at 400 horsepower while the torque peaks at 696 Nm, starting from the start. The lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 90 kWh is installed under the cockpit floor. It recharges to 80% in 10 hours on a socket of 7 KW but in only 45 minutes on a fast terminal (100 KW). Jaguar announces an autonomy of 480 km according to the next standard WLTP. As for performance, the 100 km/d is reached in 4.5 seconds and the peak speed is deliberately clamped to 200 km/h so as not to gréver the battery life. The engineers have planned different driving modes to save energy and recover a little capacity at the foot and braking.

The cockpit is largely inspired by the latest developments in the latest models of the Range Rover family. The I-Pace thus converts to the digital display and the two overlapping touch screens. The one at the bottom manages the air conditioning functions. We will finally regret an agreed treatment for such a revolutionary car. It is regrettable that Jaguar did not take advantage of the electric switch to innovate and completely rethink the cockpit. If 2019 Jaguar i-Pace is not a lightweight model (2,200 kg), its road behavior should take advantage of a multiarm rear suspension, a balanced mass distribution (50/50) and a lower center of gravity of 130 mm relative to the F-pace.
The first of the major manufacturers to unveil its electrical claims, Jaguar should soon be joined by the three German players of the premium. Audi is to present the Q8 e-Tron this year and Mercedes should unveil the first vehicles in its EQ range. As for BMW, it whispers that it could create the surprise in Geneva with a project 100% electric.
