2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Review; The Reconquest SUV
As a Jeep with his Renegade, Mitsubishi hopes to touch the hearts with his 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Will the Eclipse Cross be the instrument of the reconquest? This 4.40 m long model is interspersed between the ASX (4, 30 m) and the Outlander (4.66 m), which takes over the platform. It owes its aesthetic to Tsunehiro Kunimoto, one of the great Japanese designers, who joined Mitsubishi in 2014 after spending several decades at Nissan. Its sculpted lines give it an undeniable visual identity. Random or not, they also evoke those of Volvo’s SUV. But the rear bezel split into two, a solution formerly adopted by Citroën and Honda will divide the opinions.
2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Interior
The interior surprises pleasantly by the sobriety and the quality of its materials, as well as by the rigor of their joints. The driving position, of resolutely classical inspiration, revolves around an “information” axis, which crosses the middle of the dashboard, and which overlooks an “orders” axis. A “head high” reading device and a touchpad can enhance this cockpit. Most of the current aids to safety and comfort respond to the call from the intermediate finish (“Intense”).
The cockpit is full of tricks and offers a nice modularity. The rear seat can tilt from 16 to 32 ° (9 positions) and also slides over 20 centimeters, varying the volume of the trunk from 341 to 448 liters. The 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is distinguished by an integral transmission, called S-AWC. It is accompanied by an active yaw control (horizontal rotating movement of the body), controlled by the brakes, which improves the stability in the curves. We tested it on frozen tracks: its effectiveness provides a real safety gain when the adhesion is degraded. It is unfortunately available only on the most expensive model (€35,990), although very well equipped (automatic box, leather) which requires an effort of €11,000 compared to the price of the entry-level two-wheel drive (€24,990).
2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Test Drive, MPG, Performance
On the road, it is not possible to say that the car is showing a great dynamism, but it is easy and comfortable. Its suspension and its upholstery, firm without being hard, are good assets. The Eclipse Cross is offered with a four-cylinder gasoline of 1.5 L developing 163 hp coupled with a 6-speed gearbox or automatic CVT option. Its 8 “reports”, artificially created, can be manually selected via pallets placed behind the steering wheel. This device is probably what is best in the genre. However, its approval remains lower than that of a traditional converter box. This will arrive at the end of 2018, with also 8 reports, associated with a diesel of 2.2 L developing 150 hp. An “electrified” version of the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross should then be born.
Mitsubishi has a lot of hopes for this well-designed and well-built vehicle to regain a little vigor in the tricolor market. The Japanese brand, inventor of the first 4 × 4 in 1936, probably dreams of touching the hearts and experiencing the same success that Jeep records with his Renegade.
