2019 Nissan Leaf 2; The Best Small Electric Car On The Market?
The second generation of Nissan Leaf, 2019 Nissan Leaf 2 does not revolutionize the genre, but it is progressing to the slow pace of battery evolution.
The world’s first high-powered, purely electrically propelled series car, the Nissan Leaf, launched in 2010, will pass the witness next month to a deeply revamped second generation. These eight years of marketing give Nissan a valuable experience.
After selling some 300,000 copies, having accumulated a total of 3.9 billion kilometers, the Japanese manufacturer now has a very precise idea of the buyer’s profile. In France, they are 12,000 to have tried the electrical experiment and, for most of them, it proved conclusive.
If the Leaf was first considered as the second car in the foyer, the satisfaction they gained from the use quickly promoted it to number one, in front of the thermal motor car which became the one of the weekend and the holidays. Despite a limited range of action, the electric quickly imposed itself on the daily routes, reflecting an average annual mileage of 17,000 km for the Leaf, compared to 12,000 km for a Qashqai.
The electric car has undeniable qualities that we have rediscovered at the whim of this test, but it still hangs a few balls. The batteries remain heavy and costly to produce. The new 2019 Nissan Leaf 2, supposed to illustrate the latest progress in this matter, weighs more than 1 500 kg, i.e. 1 quintal more than its predecessor, and its rate starts at €33,900, very high values in the case of a compact sedan.
Add a limited autonomy to 270 kilometers (WLTP), much lower than a thermal model, not forgetting a network of fast charging terminals notoriously inadequate, and you will understand that this Nissan is not addressed to Mr. All-the-world.
2019 Nissan Leaf 2 Engine Performance; Range
“2019 Nissan Leaf 2 is still not a beauty cannon, but its style is less cleaving. Its owners will ride in electric without looking. ”
The connected drivers should still welcome the 2019 Nissan Leaf 2. It’s still not a beauty cannon, but its style is less cleaving. Its owners will ride in electric without looking. Only The walking silence will betray the electric machine lodged under the hood.
The latter now develops 150 hp and 320 Nm, values comparable to those of a 2-liter turbodiesel. In fact, accelerations and repeats are electrifying, the 0 to 100 km/h, in particular, is shipped in less than 8 seconds. Only the peak speed limited to 144 km/h to preserve the autonomy puts a brake on the performance.
Thanks to a battery with a capacity of 30 kWh to 40 kWh, the Leaf can now travel 270 kilometers according to the new WLTP standard, 378 kilometers according to the old NEDC. At the end of our trial, this distance was 240 kilometers. Refueling then requires 21 hours on a domestic outlet of 2.2 kW, 7 hours on a wall box delivering 6.6 kW. And if fortunately, a quick charging terminal (50 KW) is nearby, then it becomes possible to recover 80% of the capacity in 40 minutes.
“The” e-pedal “mode is a fun and efficient way to drive the Leaf 2 with the only accelerator pedal.”
The driving of the 2019 Nissan Leaf 2 proves restful but not boring. As fun as it is effective, an “e-pedal” driving mode combines an advanced regeneration in deceleration with conventional braking. Thus, 90% of the time the Leaf 2 is carried out with the only accelerator pedal.
As an option, a semi-autonomous type 2 mode, combining intelligent speed controller and line keeping, also allows a certain relaxation in traffic jams and on motorways. Provided, legislation obliges, to keep hands on the steering wheel. In any case, the automatic emergency braking is there to compensate for a possible lack of concentration.
This second generation of Leaf is, therefore, showing notable progress, without even deforming its predecessor. And for cause, it keeps the same platform, a bit dated. For proof, a steering wheel that still does not adjust in depth. The presence of the batteries under the floor also creates too much seating height.
The large templates will struggle to find the ideal driving position. We also deplore a dash design with no great inspiration, some switches dating from another era and a perceived quality unworthy of a car of this price. As if the price of the batteries had to be compensated. In France, an ecological bonus of 6 000 € nevertheless lightens the invoice.
2019 Nissan Leaf 2 Review; Verdict
Increased performance and autonomy, advanced connectivity, state-of-the-art driving aids, this second generation of Leaf has several strengths in its game. Will they be sufficient to allow it to stay one step ahead?
The announced disappearance of diesel generates a vast electric offensive, indispensable to enable manufacturers to meet their commitments in terms of reducing CO2 emissions. The next two years, the launches will multiply. We are promised a new generation of drums allowing a real technological leap. Is Leaf 2 ‘s career not likely to be shortened?
Nissan won’t stand idly by. A 64 kWh battery will be installed in 2019 in an E-Plus Leaf with a range of about 100 kilometers. And the most important remains to come with the announced development of a platform common to the Alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi, to develop twelve models 100% electric on the horizon 2022.
