Revealed as part of the Tokyo Auto Show, the spectacular concept car Toyota GR Super Sport is closely derived from the car engaged at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
The sports car is radical. The specialists no longer speak of a supercar but of hypercar, thus translating a level of performance that now has nothing to envy to the pure racing cars, Formula 1 or Sport-Prototype. The latest project in date, and not the least spectacular, the Toyota GR Super Sport Concept.
Presented at the Tokyo Auto Salon, an exhibition dedicated to tuning and other preparations derived from the competition, this prototype signed Gazoo Racing, a sports subsidiary of the Japanese brand, recalls in the process the Concept one of Mercedes-AMG which also uses a Mechanical base developed, originally, for the competition.
While Mercedes-AMG has raised the crazy bet of putting an F1 on the road, to develop its hypercar, Toyota Gazoo Racing, has gone from the Sport-Prototype TS050 Hybrid, engaged in WEC and 24 hours of Le Mans.
For the time being, this is only a letter of intent. While Mercedes-AMG announces a production in 300 copies, Toyota simply demonstrates the feasibility of a study. The SR Super Sport prototype may well remain unique, like the 1998 GT-One, designed for the sole purpose of homologation.
Shigeki Tomoyama, President of Toyota Gazoo Racing, simply says, “even if it’s going to be a while before you get the chance to drive, I hope the Toyota GR Super Sport will give you a taste of what we want to achieve.” With our next generation sports cars. Which act.
The body at the edge of the bitumen and the absence of the rear window of the prototype confirm in any case that the great tourism is not part of the specifications. The Japanese manufacturer confirms: “The GR Super Sport Concept essentially benefits from the same components as the TS050 Hybrid of the World Endurance Championship.”
Toyota GR Super Sport Engine Specs
Starting with a hybrid traction chain consisting of a 2.4-liter direct injection Biturbo V6, coupled with an electric machine to provide a total power of 1,000 hp distributed on the four 18-inch wheels (330/710 R 18). Gazoo Racing reveals no more.
Amateurs can dream of a return to Le Mans of a GT1 category that would put on track those hyper buses that should never have come out. While the LMP1 24-hour queen category is reduced to its conflating portion, a platter with an Aston Martin-Red Bull Valkyrie, a Mercedes-AMG GT-one and, therefore, a Toyota RG Super Sport would have some allure.
Meanwhile, the Gazoo Racing label is already showed by a “Bombinette”, the Yaris GRMN. And, it should soon be affixed to a replacement of the Supra coupe, sharing its platform with the next Roadster BMW Z4 and having the mission to demonstrate the sporting potential of a hybrid traction chain.
