2020 Audi Q8 Review; Powerful High-end SUV – BMW X6 Rival
We took, in the preview, the wheel of the 2020 Audi Q8, a powerful SUV looks like a cut that topped the prestigious Audi range in September.
Contrary to what its name might suggest, the Q8 is not larger or more luxurious than the Q7 that dominated the high-end SUV Audi since 2005. In reality, the Q8 turns significantly more compact and especially more sports in the soul. On the grand chessboard of the SUV, it is rival to the BMW X6, Mercedes rule cutting and the Range Rover Sport.
2020 Audi Q8 Redesign; New Platform
This new flagship on the rings is the sixth SUV in the Volkswagen Group, built from the MLB Evo platform, after the Q7, the Bentley Bentayga, the Urus Lamborghini, Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg. Like these, it is assembled in Bratislava, Slovakia, and largely enjoy the generous Bank of the organ of the group.
By looking at the underside of the Q8, we indeed find a 3.0 TDI V6, automatic 8 reports, AWD, air suspension and steering rear wheels already adopted by some of the above models.
The new SUV Audi is nevertheless distinguished by an engine with a slight hybridization in 48 volts which would allow for a gain of 0.7 l / 100 km in customer use, and the possibility of opting for an air suspension ‘Sport’ characterized by firmer settings.
2020 Audi Q8 Dimension & Changes
The tone is set, the Q8 favors road efficiency and its bodywork leave no doubt as to its sporting ambition. While flirting with the 5 meters long, it turns out shorter (-66 mm), lower (-36 mm) and more wide (+ 27 mm) the Q7 which remains the only SUV in the range available in version seven places.
Another concession to practicality, the volume of the trunk lost 45 liters, but with 605 liters his countenance remains higher than a 6 X (580 liters) and Audi also claims a better habitability.
If the style of the Q8 seems, at first glance, less aggressive as that of the BMW, it becomes S Line finishing with 22-inch wheels fitted to the copy of our pictures. The imposing grille octagonal, ribbed six vertical chrome strips, inaugurates the new signature style of the SUV for the brand.
Frameless doors and the elusive roof line are borrowed from the world of the Cup. Presented as a merger between a large SUV and a luxurious cut four doors, the Q8 resurrects some features of the original Quattro coupe, such as the very slanted flat bezel style or the banner linking the fires out.
Inside, the instrumentation, navigation, multimedia and air conditioning go digital and tactile, with everything this allows in terms of customization. This wind of modernism reminds one that blows in the cockpit of the big sedans of the brand, but the Q8 is also distinguished by a wide and sober black headband in which the central screen may disappear to further enhance the sleek character of the drawing. In comparison, the dashboard of the Q7 seems outdated.
The difference in character between the two large SUV Audi continues from the first laps. Our test perched run to more than 3,500 meters in altitude in the North of Chile’s Atacama desert, will not allow us to truly test the sporty efficiency of the Q8, but it is clear of this first contact is it significantly less clumsy than the Q7.
Convinced that it was lighter, we have also been surprised to discover whom he accused a quintal in addition on the scale. The project managers attribute this ballast to light hybridization. The Fund we seemed more rigid, it has perhaps been strengthened which could also increase the mass. There is also 24 liters of the AdBlue tank, needed to clean up the diesel.
Whatever it is, steering wheel in hands, the 2020 Audi Q8 is more responsive to the orders of the driver and it fits with greater precision in turn. The gain is all the more remarkable that comfort is preserved. Ride on the corrugated so that some excitement back into the cockpit.
For the sensitive backs, the ideal is probably settled for the origin in 19-inch pneumatic riding. We have, alas, not had the opportunity to test it, nor the suspension metal springs and piloted depreciation that fitted in series.
The V6 3.0 TDI “mild hybrid”, single engine available at launch, fulfills very honorably of his task, propelling the Q8 from 0 to 100 mph in just 6.3 seconds. Audi gives, for the time being, no figure of consumption, but at the end of a trial conducted in a rather peaceful rhythm, the onboard computer showed 11 l / 100 km.
Difficult to expect better with 286 HP under the hood and 2.15 tonnes to tow. Hybridization effectively seconds the automatic to streamline reminders. As for the all-wheel drive, its distribution of base favoring the axle rear (40/60%), combined with the four steering wheels, increases agility by the curve.
For the clumsy, distracted, even supporters of the effort, the Q8 is given nothing less than thirty-nine driving AIDS. Piloting is not fully autonomous but it comes close, already accessing the level three on a scale that five automation.
Q8 users who will use it to tow a van or a trailer will benefit assistance to reverse. As for those rarer, who plan to borrow hollow roads, the air suspension option will allow them to vary the plate on 90 mm and thus wear the guard ground to 254 mm.
The BMW X6 has now a rival to his measure. Not happy to give him the gun, the Audi Q8 shows one step ahead in terms of technology, delay content that the Munich firm will, however, be happy to fill with a new generation of X 6 expected next year.
The difference could be the field of powertrains. Launched with a V6 diesel to 286 HP (50 TDI), the Q8 will be available in January next with another 231 HP (45 TDI) diesel V6 and a V6 biturbo essence of 340 HP (55 TFSI). He will need to counter the powerful X 6 M. Audi would have in his boxes an RSQ8 driven by the 4-litre biturbo of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid V8, developing 680 HP. The SUV S does not Sport?
