2020 BMW X4 30i Price & Equipment

The high-dose injection of coupe codes enhances the sportiness of the New-generation 2020 BMW X4 30i.

BMW will it become an SUV brand? We are not there yet but its high-legged vehicles continue to thrive, to the detriment of the sedan. Their share in overall sales will soon flirt with 35%. A pioneer in this segment and thus becoming one of the most legitimate over time, the Munich manufacturer is working to push its advantage by deploying its all-around offer. The year 2018 is marked by the X, the symbol of its SUV. While waiting for the arrival of a completely remodeled X5 and a new X7, BMW has expanded its catalog a few months ago from an X2 and now a new generation of X4. Like its predecessor, this latest SUV is produced in the United States at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. It is based on the platform of the recent X3 which is distinguished by the borrowing many traits usually assigned to the coupe.

2020 BMW X4 30i Redesign & Dimensions

Parked next to his successor, the first X4 would almost go for a rough draft. The lines have become more athletic and mostly reflect a Latin influence within the style office. The double boss of the rear window spoiler thus returns to the Milanese body builder Zagato. Add a flying flag like a coupe, which makes the salt of the model, the taillights, and a trunk spoiler drew like those of the next Series 8 coupe and you get a really exciting SUV. Compared to the previous model, the new 2020 BMW X4 30i extends 81 mm, of which 54 mm at the wheelbase, widens 37 mm and decreases by 3 mm. Faced with a size that is not compact (4.75 m long), we can only praise the presence of parking radars and cameras that allow locating the vehicle in a 360 ° environment and that facilitate the parking maneuvers.

When we learn that the X4 is equipped with suspension settings contributing to agility, we wonder what it can stay at X3. The latter retains the appeal of two-wheel drive versions (the X4 is automatically associated with the all-wheel drive), a more accessible price (- € 3,000), easier access to the rear seats, a roof guard, and a more generous chest. While the double-bottomed X4 has gained 25 liters (525 liters), the X3 has 25 liters more. With the comfort access (+ 600 €), it opens and closes automatically bypassing the foot under the shield. This system knows its limits in an underground car park where no sensor interrupts the maneuver.

2020 BMW X4 30i Features – High-tech equipment

This SUV, which differs from the mass, borrows its interior atmosphere and its main equipment at X3. The choice of materials and the quality of manufacture underline the will of BMW to raise the status of a model heckled by many rivals. Starting with the Mercedes GLC Coupé. If the needles counters have converted to digital, the presentation remains very traditional with a center console oriented towards the driver and incorporating at its top the touchpad. After a few hours of acclimation, we navigate the tablet without leaving the road eyes, using the knob on the console. Simple gestures also make it possible to control certain functions, such as the reception of a telephone call or the adjustment of the sound, but with the use, this option (+ 300 €) s’ turns out superfluous. The head-up display as standard (color option at € 1,000) contributes to driving comfort, but the sun that illuminated during the summer period is a source of reflection in the cavity of the projection system. On rainy days, the lack of rear window wipers proves even more annoying as the visibility behind is really reduced.

As always at BMW, the excellent driving position is enhanced by the presence of semi-bucket leather seats whose checkered pattern fits the spine perfectly. The most sensitive of them will discard the option of 21-inch wheels (2 050 €) characterized by the roughness of lifts on the degraded pavement. Our test vehicle also allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the semi-autonomous driving system. Provided you drive on well-defined tracks, after pressing two buttons on the steering wheel, the 2020 BMW X4 30i takes the hand, that is to say, it accelerates and brakes in your place and keeps in the way by doing it – even corrections on the steering wheel. The legislation does not allow this kind of situation, after a few seconds, the system requires you to put your hands back on the steering wheel. In fact, when you’re used to driving, restoring the controls has something reassuring because the device confesses its limits when the white lines are faded or too far apart. The vehicle loses the pedals! By cons, on a highway, a simple pulse on the flashing triggers a change of lane. Impressive!

2020 BMW X4 30i Engine Specs & Fuel Economy

Under the hood, a reflection of the time, the 4-cylinder, petrol and diesel reign supreme. Our choice fell on an X4 30i, the most efficient gasoline version of the catalog billed 5,700 euros more than the entry-level 20i (184 hp). With 252 horsepower boosted by a dual input turbo, the 30i displays correct performance validated by a 0 to 100 km / h shot in 6.3 seconds. In terms of approval, however, it can not keep the comparison with a 6-cylinder in line. If it has neither velvety nor flexibility, it also suffers from a lack of brilliance at startup.

The consequence of a long staging of the remarkable 8-speed automatic transmission in order to lower consumption. Successful operation: after more than 1,600 km of a varied route, the computer stabilized at 10.9 l / 100 km, a range of 620 km. This is 3.5 l / 100 km more than the official values but it is already a great performance for a gasoline engine. Driving the light foot this coupe SUV is not a sinecure as the dynamism of the chassis encourages to force the pace.

One is surprised even to wind the curves like a GT, well helped by the adjustments of the suspension Directdrive of series and the direction with variable gearing very incisive. The high center of gravity and a mass which, despite a gain of 50 kg compared to the previous generation, still exceeds 1,800 kg, eventually bring us back to reality. 5 l / 100 km more than the official values but this is already a good performance for a gasoline engine.

2020 BMW X4 30i Review

From the X3, BMW manages to offer a significantly different SUV. Even if the X4 puts us on the road to semi-autonomous driving, driving this vehicle, we aspire more to drive than to be driven. If space and functionality are not a priority and you’re ready for some portfolio-level concessions, this 2020 BMW X4 30i will not disappoint you. Remaining CO2 emissions that, in the case of our vehicle, reached 167 g / km, which represents an additional 4,050 euros.
