Clean and modern in lines, but not mischievous: the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid does not want to be a fashion car , it’s a discreet car, suitable for those who do not like being noticed. Maybe this is not the style that we Europeans love, but the numbers are right: on a global level, the CR-V was the best-selling SUV from 2012 to 2017.
Inside has improved a lot, both in design (the most European among the Japanese), both in the quality – already high – of finishing materials. Honda has invested a lot of energy also to improve the space on board and the technological equipment, which as standard offers a long list of driving aids. No diesel on the horizon: only petrol engines and the new hybrid engine, combined with two or four-wheel drive, we went to try in Spain in solar Seville.
2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Dimensions – More Space
We said, despite the (shy) business card, this fifth generation of Honda CR-V improves on all fronts, starting from space. The length compared to the previous version remains unchanged ( 4.60 meters ), but the wheelbase is 3 cm longer, which means more comfortable passengers and more liters of the boot, which now measures 497 liters, on the Hybrid, 561 liters on the version on petrol. Also good space for storage compartments: many, capacious and even modular.
2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Specs – 2nd Honda Hybrid & 4X4 is Available
But let’s get to the heart, hybrid in this case, of the new Honda CR-V. It is a unique engine: a 2.0 four-cylinder engine is combined with an electric motor and a generator. However, these two are connected only by a clutch, there is no change.
Honda claims that in this way consumption is reduced in every situation and that driving is more pleasant and intuitive. The numbers are not bad at all: the engine produces a total of 184 hp, the 0-100 km / h is covered in 8.8 seconds and the maximum speed is 180 km / h. As for consumption, however, the House declares an average of 5.3 l / 100 km (according to the NEDC approval cycle).
The 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid is also available with four-wheel drive, this time more traditional: there is no rear electric motor to provide power to the wheels, but a “trivial” transmission shaft.
Test Drive & Gas Mileage
From the first few kilometers, the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid looks different from the classic hybrid with a CVT gearbox. The acceleration is more direct, as if there was a gear engaged, at least until you press the accelerator up to half or three quarters. Only when you press the pedal all the way down is the clutch starting to slip and allow the heat engine to intervene in an important way.
This operation of the engine not only makes the response more immediate and driving more enjoyable but also makes the ride quieter. It hardly rattles, and when it does not scream too annoyingly. The boost of the 184 hp is good, even if diluted, but the CR-V is not a slow car at all. And then you can drive with pleasure even among the curves, where you appreciate a set-up “right middle way” and connected and consistent steering.
Fuel consumption depends very much use: in the city, you can do a lot of kilometers almost exclusively using the electric motor, while the hilly suburban locations the internal combustion engine works much more. Let’s say that the 7 liters / 100 km could represent a realistic consumption.
