With the 2020 McLaren 720S Spider now available as a spider variant in addition to the 570 S Spider, the McLaren range now includes two convertibles. Two new colors are introduced with this convertible version of the 720S: “Belize Blue” and “Aztec Gold”. Note that the palette, comprising 23 colors, offers the “Supernova Silver”, a legacy shade from the McLaren MP4-12C.
The carbon fiber frame “Monocage II-S” is specific to the spider version. It is derived from the coupé’s “Clutch II” structure but does not integrate the central “spine” that runs from front to rear above the cockpit. The rigidity of the carbon fiber makes it possible to do without reinforcements despite the disappearance of the fixed roof. Thus, the weight gain does not exceed 49 kilos compared to the coupe and is mainly due to the retractable hardtop and its storage space. The lines did not suffer from the removal of the roof. On the contrary.
On empty, the new Spider McLaren does not charge more than 1332 kg on the scale. The retractable roof can retract up to 50 km/h in just 11 seconds. A technology that required the filing of no less than three worldwide patents! An electrochromic glass roof, with the ability to switch from transparent to tinted at the touch of a button, is available as an option.
2020 McLaren 720S Spider Performance
The active rear spoiler adapts to the profile of the bodywork. Its settings, therefore, vary if the roof is raised or lowered. The original Pirelli P Zero tires can be replaced by Pirelli P Zero Corsa (more focused for the track) at no extra cost. The 4-liter twin-turbo V8 still develops 720 horsepower for a torque of 770 Nm. The performance is almost identical to that of the coupe, with 2.9 seconds required to reach 100 km/h, 7.9 seconds to reach 200 km/h and a top speed of 341 km/h. The manufacturer takes care to specify that fans of driving in the open air can not exceed 325 km/h!
