While the sports car company is going to market by the end of the year a 100% electric crossover (i-Pace), Range Rover launches a refillable hybrid version of its Classic and sport models in the coming days.
Externally, nothing distinguishes these new models from their brothers, with the exception of a hatch that opens in the grille. It provides access to an outlet for charging the battery with a capacity of 13.1 kWh. Installed under the floor at the back, it cut the 98-litre trunk. The duration of the recharge depends on the type of equipment used. It can vary from only 2 hours 45 with a quick charging system (Wallbox) up to 7 hours 30 on a domestic outlet (10 amps).
The activation of the operation can be programmed to give preference to the time ranges where the electricity rate is the lowest. These accumulators supply an 85 KW (116 hp) electric motor placed in the 8-speed automatic transmission. Like the Volvo XC90 T8 and the BMW X5 40th, the electrical module is associated with a 4-cylinder direct fuel injection. In the case of the Range Rover, this is the Ingenium 2 litre turbocharged 300 hp block. The cumulative power comes out at 404 hp while the torque peaks at 640 Nm. This situates the 2020 Range Rover P400E halfway between the 4.4 L (339 hp) turbo Diesel V8 and the 5 litre petrol (525 hp) V8 in terms of power.

2020 Range Rover P400E Performance
If the performance is close to the first named, the Reloadable hybrid outclasses all other versions in terms of environmental performance. By the magic of its electric machine, its official consumption is 2.8 L/100 km (NEDC standard), i.e. CO2 emissions reduced to 64 g/km. For the record, the entire range exceeds 200 g, with the exception of the 258 HP Turbo diesel V6, which displays 182 g releases. For business, the calculation is quickly done. This is what we experienced at the start of the Blenheim Palace located near Oxford. The Classic model starts with a few crossing exercises, to verify that it is still able to cross a river and trudge in the forest. We cross animals that didn’t hear us coming. The advanced system allows a regulation of the torque of the electric machine. Back on the tarmac: the onboard computer announces only 33 km of electrical action, a loss of 5 km from the start. There are several options available to the driver: Allow the automation to operate, press EV mode, preserve electrical energy for future use, an agglomeration traverse for example, or activate the energy optimization function Coupled with navigation. The selection of these two modes is done from a menu “My EV” not obvious to find without explanation in the new digital screen showed by the velar.
On the hybrid mode, the phases of the energy change are perfectly transparent and alone, the display of the energy indicator and the unusual operating silence will tell you that you do not burn any drop of fuel. This should be possible by pushing spikes up to 137 km/h. The traffic did not allow us to go beyond 120 km/h. But, we were pleasantly surprised to be able to maintain a sustained pressure on the accelerator pedal without risking to start the 4-cylinders. The latter will be able to make teeth cringe. It does not have the nobility of a 6-cylinder in terms of sound and approval. Electricity however provides a significant boost effect during acceleration phases (6.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h) and repeats. At this rate, the battery empties quickly. The system of recovery of energy at sunrise and braking has appeared to us little performance and above all too simplistic, especially in the face of competition that proposes several levels of regeneration.
At the end of a 130 km course on a crooked English secondary network and as degraded as ours, the computer indicated a consumption of 11.5 l/100km, which seems quite honorable considering the high weight to be moved (2.5 tons). A major urban and peri use and regular refills can bring it down under the 10-litre bar. Attached to a high autonomy resulting from a moderate consumption, the large rollers will still have an interest in favouring diesel.

Our opinion the rechargeable hybrid technology for moving without noise is perfectly suited to the Pullman philosophy of the Range Rover. Travelling in this very fleece cocoon, multiplying the refinements, is not within the reach of all the scholarships. For 33,600 euros Less (€88,500), it is possible to acquire a Sport equipped with the same system. The French clientele was not mistaken. Already 450 copies of the Sport were ordered in the space of a few weeks, instead of 100 Classic P400e.
