2020 Renault Scenic is The compact minivan of the French brand inaugurates a new generation of small 4-cylinder turbo gasoline designed with Mercedes.
It is therefore at Scénic and Grand Scénic that the privilege of inaugurating a new generation of engines, the result of a collaboration between the Alliance Renault Nissan and Daimler, is back. If Mercedes already used some diesel mechanics of the diamond company, this new petrol turbo block is the first to have benefited from a joint development that has lasted four years.
2020 Renault Scenic With New Engine
Renault does not hesitate to talk about a new family of engines. In fact, this 4-cylinder 1330 cm3 is already available in five power levels: 115, 130,140,150 and 160 hp. At Renault, the New Model of Scénic has the first, but the Mégane, Captur, Talisman, Space and, eventually, the next Clio will also be equipped.
Mercedes, for its part, has just announced that it will equip, in its declination 160 ch, the new Class A, then its other compact when they will be renewed. Finally, Dacia, Nissan, and Mitsubishi should also make good use of it. Given the expected production volumes, several assembly sites were created in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and also in China but, unfortunately, not in France.
The economies of scale that can be realized and the involvement of a premium brand in development have contributed to the adoption of noble technical solutions that distinguish this new TCe from its predecessor.
There is a variable timing at the intake and exhaust, an injection pressure of 250 bar and an electrically controlled turbo discharge valve. All these refinements that bear fruit in terms of driving a pleasure, as we have seen behind the wheel of a luxurious Grand Scénic TCe 160 Initiale Paris, available from € 37,500.
Even though the EDC 7 automatic dual-clutch transmission smooths the engine behavior, we appreciated the almost total disappearance of the turbo response time that affected the previous turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine. The TCe 160 resumes without a timeout and, despite a “long-run” architecture, it shows a certain ease to go on a run.
Compared to the 3-cylinder competition, this 4-cylinder vibrates less and is quieter. On the highway, the aerodynamic noise generated by the body of Grand Scénic become more troublesome. But there is more unpleasant, an average consumption of 9 l / 100 km recorded at the end of our test, not corroborating the good official figures (NEDC).
We also deplored consumption exceeding 10 l / 100 km in the city, despite the “stop and start”. The high mass of the great Scénic, close to 1.6 tons, partly explains this voracity, as well as the relative softness of the accelerations. And, there are unfortunately no pallets driving to facilitate raises.

2020 Renault Scenic Redesign
Renault has managed to beautifully renew the minivan genre. The last Scénic does not lack pace, but it suffers from the comparison with the latest SUV, starting with the Peugeot 5008. Perched on large 20-inch wheels, the 2020 Renault Scenic remains comfortable, but it filters less well small shocks at low speed. More clumsy, it does not display, either, the same efficiency on winding road.
Conducted as a good father, he will, however, fulfill his office. Especially as its new small gasoline engines significantly improve the driving pleasure. It remains to reduce his voracity at the pump. A light hybridization system at 48 volts would be welcome.
