One month before the opening of the Beijing show, Volkswagen unveils 2020 VW Touareg, the third generation of its large Touareg SUV, tailor-made for the vast Chinese market.
If the Touareg, third of the name, was the great absent from the last edition of the Geneva Fair, it is partly because its first market will now be China. Unlike the Phaeton that has become Phideon, this 2020 VW Touareg assembled in Bratislava, Slovakia, will still remain available in Europe.
Unlike the twins Atlas and Teramo, sold in the United States and China and based on the famous MQB platform, the Touareg 3 was conceived from the MLB Evo platform, already adopted by the Audi Q7, the Bentley Bentayga, the Lamborghini Urus and the last Porsche Cayenne.
2020 VW Touareg Redesign and Changes
Useful precision, Volkswagen’s large luxury SUV, therefore, receives longitudinal, non-transverse mechanics like Atlas and Teramo. Indeed, even if the Touareg 3 grows by almost 8 cm to reach 4.88 m, it remains within the 5.04 m of its cousins who retain the exclusivity of the seven places. That being the case, its rear seat slides on 16 cm and the volume of its chest increases by 113 liters to reach 810 liters.
Shorter than the Atlas and the Teramo, the luxurious Touareg is nevertheless positioned at the top, and more precisely at the top of the Volkswagen range, which confirms a luxurious interior. Indeed, if the tense lines of the 2020 VW Touareg evoke the Tiguan and its biting grille on the lighthouses the artery, the modernism and the quality of its dashboard refer rather to the Audi excellence.
The endless list of driving aids permitting semi-autonomous driving, the multitude of comfort equipment, advanced connectivity and the refinement of materials attest to a very high-end positioning.
The most spectacular is the juxtaposition of two 12-and 15-inch screens of the Cockpit Innovision that truly propels the Touareg into a new era.
2020 VW Touareg Powertrain Specs
Witness to the great ambitions of this third generation, it will be launched exclusively with two turbodiesels 3.0 TDI V6 of 231 hp and 286 hp, and a Turbo petrol 3.0 TFSI V6 of 340 hp.
Volkswagen also announces the upcoming availability of a 421 HP turbodiesel 4.0 TDI V8, as well as the existence of a refillable 367 HP hybrid version that will initially be reserved for the Chinese market.
Proving that Europe is not the primary destination of this 2020 VW Touareg, Volkswagen has apparently not considered it useful to equip it, like the latest Audi productions equipped with the same engines, with a light hybridization system in 48 volts to reduce C02 emissions.
It is also the case that the 6 cylinders on board the Touareg are coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an evolution of the 4Motion integral drive allowing a variation of the torque between the front and rear axles between 70/30% and 20 /80%.
On the chassis side, the 48% aluminum shell contributed to lightening the 106 kg SUV. Added to a steering on all four wheels and, as an option, an active roll-off system and a hydropneumatic suspension, this augurs best in terms of road behavior.
Availability & Pricing
While waiting to discover its price, we already know that this new Touareg will be available in Europe at the end of June. In fact, the Volkswagen SUV range will soon include six models including the small T-Cross expected at the end of the year. And, the firm of Wolfsburg has just announced that it will be completed in 2020 by a 100% electric model, the I. D. Crozz.
