Rivian Comes with R1T Pickup & R1S SUV – New Electric Car Player
A new player in the electric car market, Rivian is the curiosity of the Los Angeles show. He is preparing to launch large recreational vehicles in the US market.
The electric shift that the car is negotiating is giving rise to new vocations. After Elon Musk, who revolutionized the high-end vehicle market with his Tesla, it’s time for another American to try his luck on the zero-emission car market. Robert “RJ” Scaringe, a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, set out to market zero-emission leisure vehicles under the Rivian brand. To complete his project, he acquired the Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois, in January 2017.
Its first two vehicles, the Rivian R1T pickup and the Rivian R1S SUV, are the surprise of the Los Angeles show. In the American format, these two models will not disappoint in the country of Uncle Sam. The pickup measures 5.47 m long and the SUV 5.04 m while the height of the two vehicles rises around 1.82 m. Presented on a stand whose decoration refers to the world of outdoor and adventure, these vehicles stoke the curiosity of visitors to the California exhibition. Free of frills, the style is successful. It refreshes the genre with its closed grille and wide white signature strip, black plastic undercarriage, high waistline, and large glass surface.
Rivian engineers have prepared their business well and the design looks very neat. The first two vehicles are based on a sandwich chassis incorporating a double-wishbone suspension at the front and multi-link at the rear and the battery pack in the underbody. A location that lowers the center of gravity. Four electric motors, one per wheel Three types of batteries are available: 105, 135 or 180 kWh of capacity with respectively 300 kW of power, 562 kW or 522 kW. The batteries power four electric motors, one per wheel. The power per wheel is 147 kW (196 hp). Certainly for congestion issues, the SUV associated with the battery of 180 kWh is only available in version 5 places, unlike the other two models that accommodate 7 people in three rows of seats. Among the benefits of an electrical architecture, note the presence of a trunk with a volume of 330 liters under the front bonnet. It is a welcome addition to the rear luggage compartment that only accepts 180 liters of cargo.
The battery has been developed to accept a fast charge greater than 160 kW. The manufacturer ensures to recover 340 km of autonomy in 30 minutes of charge. Depending on the battery versions, the range varies between 390, 530 and 700 km.
Performance is also dependent on the battery. If the speed is limited to 210 km/ h, the 100 km / h can be reached in 3 seconds with the battery of 135 kWh.
The interior very neat and very clean includes a dashboard covered with recycled wood. It houses two digital screens, 12.3 inches facing the driver and 15.6 inches in a horizontal position in the center.
